Leaving Atlanta, the day promised rain. All the way up I-75 we waited for it to start. But it never did. The wind drove heavy clouds overhead, dropping the temperature into the 20's. There were occasional sunbreaks, some longer than others. They were magnificent when they came. 134 years prior, to the day, the weather was much the same. Cold, more clear than not. Some described it as bitter. But weather conditions were a minor concern to most that day. The fate of Chattanooga, gateway to the southern heartland, was being determined along the route we took through the city, matching the movements of armies and soldiers. They were there to fight. We went where they'd fought and died . . . 134 years later, to the day.
November 25th, 1997, marked the 134th anniversary of the battles for Chattanooga. On that day, Dave Buckhout and T.C. Moore retraced the route along which these battles flowed, from Lookout Mountain, through the city, and onto its finale atop Missionary Ridge. They had cameras, a road map, and an '86 Buick.
Maps depicting the battle and their progress through Chattanooga can
be found in the MAPS section.
The TECHNICAL section describes
